Comprehensive Safeguarding & Wellbeing Policy

Document Ref: UKCBH/SAF/2025 | Last Reviewed: June 2025

1. Introduction and Scope

The UK COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND HEALTH (UKCBH) is committed to providing a secure and supportive environment for all students, staff, and visitors. This policy sets out the framework through which the College meets its statutory obligations under the Children and Families Act 2014, the Care Act 2014, and the Education Act 2002.

This policy applies to all registered students, including those studying remotely, staff members (permanent and contracted), governors, and external partners. It covers college-sanched events, campus activities, and digital interactions within the UKCBH community.

2. Definitions and Recognition of Abuse

UKCBH recognizes that abuse and neglect can take many forms. Our staff are trained to identify indicators of:

  • Physical Abuse: Hitting, shaking, or any physical harm.
  • Emotional Abuse: Persistent emotional maltreatment or bullying.
  • Sexual Abuse: Non-consensual sexual activity or exploitation.
  • Neglect: Failure to provide basic physical or psychological needs.
  • Financial Abuse: Misuse of a student’s money or property.
  • Discriminatory Abuse: Harassment based on protected characteristics.
  • Modern Slavery: Human trafficking or forced labor.
  • Domestic Violence: Controlling or coercive behavior.

3. The Prevent Duty & Radicalisation

Under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, UKCBH has a statutory duty to have "due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism."

3.1 Radicalisation Risk: We monitor for signs of vulnerability to extremist ideologies, whether political, religious, or social. This includes monitoring sudden changes in behavior, withdrawal from social groups, or the sharing of extremist materials.

3.2 Freedom of Speech: While we promote open debate, the College will not provide a platform for speakers who incite hatred or violence. All external speakers must be vetted through our External Speaker Policy.

4. Online Safety & Digital Safeguarding

As education moves increasingly online, UKCBH implements strict digital safety protocols:

  • IT Monitoring: College-provided internet and devices are filtered to block harmful or illegal content.
  • Cyber-Bullying: Harassment via social media or the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is treated as a severe disciplinary matter.
  • AI Ethics: We educate students on the risks of deepfakes and digital misinformation that could lead to reputational or psychological harm.

5. Peer-on-Peer Abuse

UKCBH maintains a zero-tolerance approach to abuse between students. This includes "banter" that crosses the line into harassment, sexualized comments, non-consensual image sharing (upskirting), and physical intimidation. We recognize that peer-on-peer abuse can happen regardless of gender or age.

6. Disclosure and Reporting Procedures

If a student discloses a safeguarding concern, staff are instructed to follow the "5 R's":

Step Action
1. ReceiveListen actively and stay calm. Do not promise absolute secrecy.
2. ReassureTell the student they did the right thing by coming forward.
3. RespondOnly ask clarifying questions; do not investigate.
4. RecordDocument the disclosure using the student’s own words.
5. ReportImmediately contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

7. Confidentiality and Information Sharing

While we respect the privacy of our students, safeguarding is an exception to General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). We may share information with Local Authority Designated Officers (LADO), the Police, or Social Services if we believe a student or another person is at risk of significant harm.
